Birmingham HM 1901 'F & S'

Description
Shirrells Heath Golf Club - This is one of my ‘process of elimination’
attributions, so if any fellow member knows better I would be delighted to hear from
him/her. The Shirrells Heath Golf Club was formed on the 5th of November, 1892, at
Botley Heath near Wichkam, Hampshire and comprised nine holes. The club probably
had a strong military membership as Botley Camp was a large one at the time. This 24
mm button was a silver award, the raised lettering having a slight decoration to the
inner sections. Backmark is given as Birmingham 1901 by V & S. Of the surviving clubs
formed before 1901, South Herts, Strawberry Hill and Stinchcombe Hill are all certain
the item does not pertain to them. This is of course not conclusive, as no one is extant to
confirm what was awarded in 1901. Shooters Hill GC is quite different (see # 452)
and Seaford Head was formed later, in 1907. Shirrells Heath GC was probably lost for
training purposes in the Great War.
