Description
A silver-plated button that bears the crest of the Blackheath Golf Club.
The simple but distinctive crossed clubs and golf centre is
encircled by the following text border:
'Blackheath Golf Club AD 1745 VI ET ARTE'. I McGowan, Gerrard St, London
made this button. After extensive and reliable research, the button can
be dated to the early 1800's as McGowan was only in business during the
period 1805 - 1840. An identical button to this one is housed in Royal
Blackheath's magnificent golf museum: that button was recently donated
to them accompanied by the above informatiom as to its history. In 1805,
very few formally constituted golf clubs existed. This is a very early
and historic artefact which comes in superb condition considering it's
roughly 200 years old.
