Description
Waveney Valley Golf Club - of Bungay, Suffolk was instituted in January 1889,
originally with a nine-hole course, but enlarged to eighteen in 1896, when it was called
Bungay & Waveney Valley GC. This is a scarce example of an award in gilt metal, handengraved
on the obverse WVGC/LADIES/MONTHLY MEDAL/NOVEMBER 1903. It
measures 24mm. I have a group of four such examples, another LADIES dated JANY
1903, and two without LADIES, which are presumably gentlemen’s awards; these are
again for monthly competitions and are dated, FEBRUARY 24th 1903 and NOVEMBER
1904. One has a maker’s mark Vaughton Birm’m. As is well-known, club golf in England
in these early days was often a winter sport, and here is an illustration.
