Back of Button # 677a
ORANGE COLOUR GILT "D&S"
|
Description
W.L.G.C. - The back mark was an indication of 'colour' and quality in the Georgian period.
The grades of gilt (ie. the amount of gold in the coating) were, 'standard' 'double' and 'treble'.
'Colours' were 'orange' 'rose' 'green' 'lemon'. Orange was the usual one applied to buttons. The later
'S & D' shown on this button does NOT relate to the old partnership of Saunders & Deakin (Birmingham),
but the legends and the initials were certainly a 'pinch'! I put this button c1890-1900.
