Description

Stockport Golf Club - The club was formed in 1906 at Offerton, Stockport, Cheshire. This ornate and very solid silver award (weighing over 1oz) involves the usual emblems and club title plus the motto Mens Aequa In Arduis (An equal mind in difficulties). Centrally upon a rococo shield a thief’s head roped around the neck. This is the crest of the Davenport family, for centuries the Master Sergeants in the Peke and Forests of Leek and Macclesfield. The Davenports were great landowners and lords of the various manors. Backmarked Birmingham 1912 by J.M.. A similar one but with a flush hollowback construction is dated Birmingham 1908 by V.& S..

Information is from an article in "The British Golf Collectors Society" written by Dixon Pickup.
