Description
Rochford Hundred Golf Club - This club was formed in 1893 and situated some four miles
north of Southend-on-Sea. A silver (not hall marked) award example (21mm), slightly
convex with raised designs. Upon a lined ground a central shield bears the arms of the
ancient Rochford familiy, originally of Stoke, Leicestershire from the period of Henry V:
Quarterly or and gules, a border sable bezantee. The ‘metal’ and ‘colours’ are correctly shown.
‘RH’ ‘G’ ‘C’ in Old English capitals displayed around the shield. Contrary to local popular
belief these arms having nothing to do with the famous Boleyne family, Viscount Rochford
(later Earl of Wiltshire and Ormonde) and father of Anne Boleyne, nor the later Nassau
family, Earls of Rochford. The back marks are ‘Firmin & Sons Ld London’. A gilt uniform
version is identical.
