HM Birmingham 1909

Description
Ramblers Golf Club - The club was most probably a club within a club, and the item
is certainly a very handsome one. Hall-marked Birmingham 1909 (22.5mm) it bears
additional decoration in white and bright green enamels. The shield with the six
martlets border from the arms of Brighton and the winged mesh marked ball crest
appear on an early medal of the Dyke Park GC, Brighton (now The Dyke GC). The
central monogram RGC is again based on similar style lettering DPGC of the above
mentioned medal. In addition to the maker’s mark V & S, the reverse is also crudely
scratch engraved, FINLAYSON GOLD MEDAL AUG. 1910. Quite when the ‘Ramblers’
were formed and when they were dissolved I have yet to ascertain. Perhaps they were
the ancestors of the present ‘Sussex Martlets’.
Information is from an article in "The British Golf Collectors Society" written by Dixon Pickup.
