Description
North Wales Golf Club - This club was formed in 1894 at Llandudno, Caernarvonshire. The
silver award example measures 25mm. The shield bears Azure, three garbs or, being the arms
of Meschines the last non-Royal Earls of Chester, with the addition of the Prince of Wales’s
crest and motto and variable title scroll, The North Wales Golf Club. The maker is S.B. & S. Ld
Birmingham 1925. Another example by G&H Bullivant Birmingham has been noted. With
a lovely pre-1914 style, this golf course makes excellent use of dunes and contours. The
first (then voluntary) PGA Assistants’ training courses of 1961 and 1962 were held here in
conjunction with Maesdu GC, in the December of each year; what a roll call of great names
put us through our paces! Sid Collins and Tom Jones of the home clubs; Eddy Musty and
Ernie Whitcombe on club-making and repairs; Fred Allott, Bill and Reg Cox to work on our
swings; plus the crowning glory at the end of the ’61 course – Henry Cotton attended by
the writer, John Stobbs, for the whole day. I also seem to recall that the evenings were not
all spent in revision and in-depth golf swing analyses, but were strongly centred around
the local nurses home.
