Description
Colne Golf Club - The club came into being as a consequence of the first General Meeting being called on the 11th of November,
1901. George Lowe, who was "Custodian of the Links" at Lytham St. Annes Golf Club, took up the challenge of laying
out a course. The newly formed Council had identified two possible sites for the course at Moss House and Law Quarry.
George Lowe came and inspected the proposed sites, and recommended that Moss House should not be considered.
Law Quarry, renamed Law Farm was therefore selected.
On 5th August 1908 in the parish schoolroom of nearby Walmsley Church a meeting was held to explore the possibilities
of forming a golf club in the district. The local Vicar chaired the meeting, the Rev. Atkinson, and the company
secretary of the nearby Slaters Bleachworks, Mr. J. Higginson, was appointed secretary. Prominent local individuals
such as Colonel Slater and Colonel Hesketh pledged their support for the idea so after a couple of subsequent meetings
Dunscar Golf Club was founded. Plans quickly got under way after Mr. G. Lowe, the professional at St. Anne’s G.C.
had completed a survey, which concluded that the available land was suitable for laying out of an 18-hole golf course.
It was decided that initially a 9-hole course would be constructed and that entrance fee for men would be two guineas
with a membership fee of the same and the ladies would pay one guinea entrance fee and an annual subscription of 10
shillings and six (old) pence. By Christmas 1908 the membership had risen to 41 males and 31 ladies and the following
May a pavilion was erected. It was a year later before a new clubhouse was built. The course officially opened in
1909 and plans to extend the course to a full 18-holes were shelved due to the onset of the First World War and it
was not until after the war that the eighteen hole course finally emerged.
