Brighton & Hove Golf Club - The club was formed in 1887 as the joint oldest club in
Sussex. With its eighteen-hole course located at Hangleton Downs on the Dyke Road
some four miles north of Brighton, it boasted 375 members in 1907. The ladies had a
separate nine-hole course near Devil’s Dyke. The large (24mm) gilt uniform button
features twin shields with arms of the two towns (granted 1897 & 1899 respectively)
and the club initials. There is no back mark. The club once enjoyed a private platform
on the old Dyke Railway. Reduced to nine holes when I first saw it c1955, the end of the
club on that site came with the construction of the new road from Sompting to Falmer.
